Exploring Montargis & the surroundings
Known as the “Venice of the Gâtinais”, Montargis is crossed by the river Loing, the Briare canal and many waterways linked by more than 130 bridges and footbridges. The historic centre is about 3 km from the hotel.
The bridges trail
Starting from the tourist office, a signposted walk takes you across 17 bridges and footbridges, including the Victor-Hugo footbridge, the Pêcherie district and rue Dorée, lined with old houses and flower-filled gardens.
Girodet Museum
Housed in the Hôtel Durzy, this “Musée de France” displays the work of Montargis-born painter Anne-Louis Girodet, a pupil of David, as well as sculptures by Henry de Triqueti. Reopened in 2019 after a full renovation.
Durzy Garden
A 19th-century English-style garden on the canal bank, planted with remarkable trees from around the world. The perfect pause between the old town and the museum.
Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Church
A landmark of the old centre, known for its Renaissance choir and 19th-century stained glass. The remains of the royal castle, on the hill, overlook the town.
The Montargis prasline
Don't leave without tasting the famous prasline, a roasted almond coated in caramel created in 1636. Maison Mazet, 43 rue du Général-Leclerc, still follows the original recipe.
Montargis market
The main market takes place on Saturday mornings, on place de la République and in the surrounding streets: Gâtinais produce, cheeses, honey, poultry and local specialities.
Lac des Closiers
In Amilly, very close to the hotel: a walk, a playground and a fitness trail around the lake. Perfect for a morning run.
Châlette-sur-Loing lake
Leisure park with a supervised beach in summer, pedal boats, mini-golf and walking trails.
Leisure in Amilly
Amilly bowling alley, AlTiCiné cinema (Montargis), Jean-Vilar cultural centre, Château-Blanc sports complex.
Vaugouard Golf Club
An 18-hole course in the grounds of an 18th-century château in Fontenay-sur-Loing.
Arboretum des Barres
In Nogent-sur-Vernisson: 35 hectares and more than 2,600 species of trees and shrubs. Seasonal opening, please check the times.
Briare and its canal bridge
The famous Briare aqueduct (1896), 662 m long, carries the canal over the river Loire. Boat trips and a mosaic museum.
Ferrières-en-Gâtinais
A medieval town with a rich heritage: the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul abbey church, half-timbered houses and the Notre-Dame-de-Bethléem chapel.
Fontainebleau & Sens
The Château de Fontainebleau and its forest, or Sens cathedral, the first Gothic cathedral in France, for a day trip.
